Reality bites pretty quickly though once you make the move to full-time shooter and realise that each and every decision about what your business does and which direction it’s heading rests on your shoulders. You are the CEO, the CFO, the PR department, the marketing department, the tea maker and the photographer. I wish the charts (by SwissMiss via Seth Godin) were in some way inaccurate, but they are bang on. I struggled with administration for years until I got completely sick of having to wrap my head around filling in forms and sorting receipts. So, a month ago I took the plunge and handed over my bookkeeping to my accountant. I can’t tell you how much it freed me up to do the things that I love and that’s make pictures. And perhaps just as importantly, the process of making pictures; the sitting and thinking and letting the mind wander unencumbered. It was advice that I initially got from Andrew Mackinnon at Taboo (see the full interview here) and I’ve never looked back. I guess now instead of doing entirely what’s in the pie chart on the left I now have days where I alternate between the two – well, at least the taking pictures bit anyway.

I went to the Philip Bloom workshop here in Melbourne Yesterday and learnt lots of interesting stuff including the fact that he won’t be using the Nikon D800 to shoot video. He says the 36mp sensor is simply too big and the camera will need to throw away too much information to get the picture down to 1920×1080. It’s not what I wanted to hear as I’ve got a D800 on pre-order, but then again it’s not too late to cancel it and get something else. I’m very tempted to wait for the Canon 5D mklll which is due to be announced any day now (if you rumour mill is right) but all of my glass is Nikon. I can use an adapter to get around it and put Nikon lenses on a Canon body but I’d have to adjust the aperture via little knob at the bottom of the lense barrel and not the dial on the camera body. Not a huge deal I know as long as it’s not going to be too fiddly when I’m under pressure like a wedding for example where things happen quickly and there’s no second chances. I’ve used the mkll to shoot quite a bit of video and the results are amazing and I could just go and buy one and be done with it. But I’m keen to see if the mklll has a headphone jack and has fixed, or at least improved, the issue of moire and aliasing. I should add that Philip admitted he hadn’t shot with the D800 or the D4 but had spoken to people who had and seen vision from both and didn’t like what he saw. Anyone in a similar situation?

Nineteen days after getting married, his beautiful wife Basia stood in front of Gary’s casket to say goodbye to the love of her life. A truly remarkable feat under normal circumstances but at thirty eight weeks pregnant it was very humbling to witness. One of them, Des “Tuppence” Moran, was shot dead (his sister-in-law was found guilty of organising the hit) in a cafe in Melbourne a few years after I took his portrait. It was a privilege to know Gaz. I’m in a long, long line of people who’ll miss him dearly.

The pair was married in front of a small group of family and friends at home. I shot some images and my wife, Mel, was the celebrant. I barely recognise the Gary I first met a few years ago. Cancer has reduced his once fit, healthy frame to skin and bone. While we sobbed into our tissues, Gaz sat proudly in his wheelchair awaiting his bride-to-be. She arrived looking beautiful and with all the glow of a woman 34 weeks pregnant. Their two young boys, Ben & Josh, danced and crawled around the loungeroom while the wedding party took turns recounting the memories of decades-long friendships. It was like a lot of weddings and like no other wedding I’ve been to. A very special day and one none of us will forget in a hurry. Congratulations Mr & Mrs Andrews

And almost without exception the final image looks nothing like the one I had floating around in my head. Take this picture of Jesse Gerner, head chef and owner of Anada restaurant in Gertrude Street Fitzroy. Initially I had him sitting in a beautiful leather chair with a knife perched in one hand and a plant in the other. I’d like to get in pretty early so I can follow the whole process through to birth. And if you’ve got any other story ideas that you think I’d like then please get in touch.

I photographed a few of the characters in his book for my Kill City – The Players exhibition and a lot of the people who’ve worked on the docks are names you’ve heard mentioned in the current-day underworld war.
